HISTORY

A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of
Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the
past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift
arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the
complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships
between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Curriculum Intent

Our history curriculum supports pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We achieve this by having a two-year cycle with a chronological approach with lower key stage 2 studying early history and upper key stage 2 continuing to present day.

Our school has developed excellent links with local historical organisations in order to enhance and
maximise quality provision for our pupils. For example, our subject leader has worked in
consultation with the ‘Lymm Heritage Centre’ to design a primary school visit format, now available
to all local schools. We have educational links with the Thelwall Heritage group who have recent
grant success and offer local site visits and enquiry skills. In addition to this, we have developed a
local history resource collection with the support of Warrington Museum who provide artefacts
found in our immediate vicinity including Roman coins, pots and traditional industry artefacts.
Our history curriculum supports British Values. We celebrate ‘Remembrance,’ linking with English for poetry themes and art. Our pupils have added our local war memorials onto the national memorial archive, complete with photographs and evaluations.

Our school is well-placed for visits to major museums and history providers which we utilise
regularly. We also invest in external provision for expert visits and theme days. Our curriculum is
enhanced through subscription to the Historical Association.

Below you will find our documents outlining our History and Geography topics as well as key vocabulary used in these topics.
