Welcome to Class 3 - Miss Malik

Welcome back to Class 3

Welcome to Thelwall Community Junior School and to Class 3. Mrs Files and I am excited to get to know you all and we would like to say Well Done for settling into Class 3. We are looking forward to a very happy, enjoyable and successful year together.

PE: Class 3 will have PE on Tuesday and Thursday. PE kits will be worn on PE days with plain black or navy jogging pants or leggings if the weather is cold. School sweatshirts and cardigans can also be warn. One of these lessons will focus on a particular sport, the first one being hockey. We will focus on developing skills of invasion and defence and play small sided games in small groups as per current guidance. The second PE lesson will be a skills-based session, following our Real PE scheme, developing children’s sporting skills with a variety of challenges.

Reading: In Guided Reading sessions, children are expected to read at least 3 times a week. This will involve reading a range of genres such as short texts, leaflets, poetry, plays or short stories. The books or activities will support children to expand their vocabulary through exposure to a variety of text genres. Like we do at school, please try to encourage children to read books and other writing that they have not come across before – hearing and learning new vocabulary and grammatical structures, and discussing this with them will greatly improve their reading and writing skills. We encourage the children to read 3 times a week at home for 10-15 minutes.

Homework: SPAG and Bug Club homework will be set on a Friday and is due the following Friday. Please also practise times tables and related division facts to improve rapid recall. The times tables Year 3 are expected to know are 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 8x, and 10x however this is not a limit.

Spelling: Children will be working on spelling patterns as well as focusing on the Year 3 and 4 Spelling list. Please see the English page of the website for this information.

English: In English, Children will be reading the story ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. Children will be focusing on the language used in the story, they will find synonyms for words and will look at how to apply them into sentences. Children will also focus on applying similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, adverbial phrases and contrasting conjunctions into their writing. This will help children to write their own version of the story, write a newspaper report and a setting description.

Maths: In Maths, we will focus on enhancing children’s strengths as well as learning new skills and concepts. We will focus on developing a solid understanding of different mathematical skills throughout the year, and ensure children are able to apply what they have learnt to a variety of contexts. This term, maths lessons will focus on developing understanding of the number system, ordering numbers, using mental and written methods for addition and subtraction.

Science: During this half term, the children will learn about Electricity. We will discuss sources of electricity, conductors and insulators, complete and incomplete circuits and we will create a switch. Children will have the chance to plan, investigate and explore in different lessons.

Geography: In Geography children will be learning about the world and local knowledge. This will involve using digimaps, compasses and atlases, to locate rivers, cities and countries around Warrington and the wider world.

RE:  Our class focus is Christianity and Judaism. We will learn about the Sacred Texts and also look at the traditions involved in both religions.

DT:  For DT the children will have the opportunity to design their own Iron Man mask. Children will decide which colours and materials to use to create their mask. They will then create their own circuit which will form the eyes for the Iron Man. This will help children to make links between Science and DT.

Music: For Music, the Year 3 children will listen and appraise the song Let your Spirit Fly by Joanna Mangona. Children will play musical activities to build their knowledge and understanding of interrelated dimensions of music and then perform the song too.

Computing: Children will be learning about esaftey, coding and using search engines for research.

French: Children will be learning how to greet one another, learning numbers and colours. They will also look at words linked to Christmas.

I really hope your child has a wonderful year in class 3, learning fantastic, new things, and making some great memories. If you have any questions, queries or concerns during the course of the year, I would be happy to discuss this with you via email, or on the phone at a mutually convenient time.
