GEOGRAPHY

The geography curriculum promotes a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that
will remain with them for the rest of their lives. At Thelwall Junior School we develop critical thinking projects and international partnerships alongside local community links to develop knowledge and understanding of the diversity of locations, places, processes and resources- both natural and human. Our geography curriculum enriches our history provision as we study how the Earth’s features are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

The quality, range and richness of provision in this subject has been recognised by the Geographical Association and the British council with the award of the Bronze PGQM and International School Award status – intermediate level.

At Thelwall Junior School, through the geography curriculum, we aim to equip our pupils with
sustainable and responsible awareness and skills for their future lives. We do this by holding
awareness days such as ‘No Electricity Day’ and ‘Outdoor Classroom Day,’ as well as major
collaborative project work linked with UNICEF and British Council on ‘Zero Hunger’ and ‘Zero Waste’
where pupils studied their own carbon footprints and food waste, created action plans,
implemented their actions, measured and reported their successes to our community, our local M.P, our international partners and the Secretary for International Development.

Our learning in class is well resourced with a wide variety of provision for trips and visits in the local
area. Our pupils engage in purposeful field work, gaining hands on experience of geographical skills.
Our curriculum delivers high quality geography with valuable links to mathematics, English, history
and other subjects where appropriate.
