Welcome to Class 6 - Miss Reynolds

PE Kits: PE will be on a Tuesday and Thursday.  PE kits will be send  home to be washed at half term.  Kits and pumps should be named.

Reading: Year 6 children are expected to read independently every night and they are able to sign their own planners.  It is helpful if you can initial to confirm that the reading is actually taking place.  You can also log any concerns that you may have. It would be advisable if you could listen in your child read aloud once per week to help discuss meanings of words and help with fluency.

Homework: will be given out on a Friday to be completed and returned by the following Thursday.  Your child will be expected to complete Maths and Grammar homework in addition to learning spellings, times tables and reading every week.

Spelling: In Year 6, there will be a large focus on learning the Key Year 5/6 words. The children will be expected to know how to spell them and use them as frequently as possible in their independent writing. The key words that the children are expected to know are attached at the bottom of the page along with those needed for Year 3/4.

English: In class we will be reading Skellig and The Water Tower as a whole class, as well as reading a book as part of a guided reading session.   We need to encourage the children to recognise that they read for different purposes and that pleasure is an important one.  Children will be encouraged to read different genres and poetry. As a class we will be writing for lots of different purposes and we will be looking at different styles of writing.  During the year we will be introducing more punctuation to develop and improve writing and practising our grammar.  We will encourage the children to widen their vocabulary and investigate the meanings and origins of words.

Maths: In Maths we will be developing our recall of all multiplication and division facts, up to and including 12 x 12.  We will be focusing on all four operations, fractions and decimals up to Christmas.

Foundation: Science for the term is focusing on Changing of materials. The children will be carrying out a number of experiments to look at reversible and irreversible changes as well as properties of material. We will be carrying out an experiment to find out which material is the best to keep our packed lunches cool.

In R.E. we will be studying Sikhism and Christianity and looking at the importance of Christmas to Christians.

In Art we are looking at perspective and will be creating our own version of a Cezanne piece and D.T. will be designing and making our own slippers.

History will be 'The struggle of the Kingdom of England' which covers Saxons, Vikings and more. A trip to Weaver Hall is usually linked to this topic.

P.E. - One session per week is provided by an outside agency were the children will participate in striking and fielding as well as net games. The second session is a focus on the key skills in games such as throwing and catching.

If you require to speak to me, please do not hesitate to call into school. I look forward to working with both you and your children.
